After working for twenty-odd years as a computer programmer and systems administrator in Johannesburg, he resigned in 1999 and used his pension money as financial back-up to write his first book, Kontrei, at home. He has since worked as a subeditor for an agricultural magazine. The bug has bitten again, and he recently resigned with the aim of writing another book.
He nurses a patch of tomatoes in his backyard. He doesn’t frequent casinos but has a flutter at Lotto twice a week.
